Dick is a San Diego native who began his musical career at the age of 9 playing clarinet, saxophone and bassoon in the San Diego City Schools music program. He played in Rock-n-Roll bands, dance combos and orchestras while in high school. Dick attended San Diego State University and while not majoring in music during college he did play in dance bands and jazz combos during and after college to help finance his and his wife’s college degrees. Dick graduated with his degree in Civil / Structural Engineering. A few years after graduating Dick gave up music to concentrate on his profession, his family and to work toward his Masters degree. He didn’t play his horns again for 38 years.
After retiring from a successful 45 year engineering career Dick picked up his music again and has been playing in a number of local area dance, jazz and concert bands ever since. He joined the Downbeat Big Band a year or so ago, and is greatly enjoying the opportunity to play with the talented group of musicians that make up this Band.
